Take Five

Middle son has been taking piano lessons for two years now. He's lately taken up playing jazz, where it's all about improv. It's done wonders for his eleven year old hands and brain.

This is the song that got him loaded on jazz:

Happy New Year Barbara! I have a glass raised to you. Incidentally, it was hearing Paul Desmond that made me take up the alto in 1958 - I'd been a clarinettist before that.

Happy new year one and all, I raised my own glass to everyone last evening! There's serendipity once again, Colin :)

Great to see young people turn on to music. I play string bass when playing jazz: great fun, except at 11pm when a roomful of drunks think that you really want to play O When the Saints again (and again and again...)

Happy New Year!

I love Take Five. One great thing about jazz is that people who look as if they should have been accountants can become really cool. Sadly, I don't think writing poetry has the same effect.

Well one thing's for sure, I don't know many eleven year old boys who love jazz; it's an education for both of us, I'm learning as he's learning, so that's quite cool. His Christmas request was to get Some Kind of Blue on CD;

That's a neat observation about jazz players, Rob - albeit jazz musicians from the 60s, I think everyone looks like an accountant in a suit and in B&W...

Dominic, I just love string bass - we were watching Walk the Line last evening - anyway I love the sound it gives in the background, those low bass sonics that you just can't get from an electic pickup and an amp.
