How do you do 40?

I'm about to celebrate one of those allegedly important birthdays. You know - the ones that end in 'oh'. I'm not sure if that's more an 'oh - did I make it his far,' or an 'oh, is that it?' or perhaps it's more an 'oh!' Which we're all entitled to, I guess.

I was on the phone to a good friend this evening and she asked me, 'Well, what are you doing for it?' I was going to mention the planned trip to London as being something a bit different to do for a birthday, but I thought I might surprise her with that one. She's not forgiven me for jetting off to Paris with Insane Husband for her birthday, back in June. That's my insane husband, not her's... I think she'd definitely not forgive me that one. Sorry this is beginning to sound like a plot for a pink novel...

An-y-way. Some suggestions for milking this 'oh' birthday might be useful. As long as they don't involve chocolate and smearing in the same sentence.

What? What do you mean I can't use chocolate and smearing in the same sentence?! Is there anything else to life? *shakes head bemusedly*

You can milk birthdays? I never knew.

How about oil and hot stones? Go for a spa with all yer mates. Massage, facials, jacuzzi, sauna and some good, good wine. Worked for me.

Is it a semi-skimmed birthday or a UHT one? I hope it's a long life one.

Have a great time whatever you decide to do

Oh dear, if I give any suggestions then that will send me off down the road of thinking that my 40th is next year! No, it's not. I'm sticking with 39! So, anyway, chocolate smearing sounds great! :-)

Don't be such a wuss, Seamus. 40 is great, liberating, and nothing to be scared of. Being in your forties makes you one of the cool people - so there!

You don't want to do what I did. I enjoyed it, but it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea.
I did nothing special for my 40th, but waited until I was 42, and celebrated that birthday. It caught everyone out. I am a strange one! :) 50 now, that was another story - I celebrated that in good style, along with our middle son's 21st, with a good old family get together. Not a chocolate or a smear within cooee. (Altho' there was chocolate cake involved ...)
A friend went on a hot air balloon ride for her 40th ... ??? And there's always bungee jumping! ;)
Now for my 60th, I am planning an overseas trip ...

I am a wuss, Minx. But not too much of a wuss to say no to chocolate smearing!

39 I will stay! :-)

Cailleach ... what about a poetry reading on your birthday, in a strange place, like in a nice hammam! :-)

You know, stranger things have been known to happen, Shameless!

CB, that is an interesting suggestion... and one I like, it goes with my sense of humour ;)

Apprentice - I might have known you'd have some nice wry things to say ;)

Minx, this sounds really good. I've always wanted to try out a spa! My sore shoulder is crying, 'yes, yes, yes!' That's my shoulder not me!

Just remember 40 is the new 30! And celebrations lasting 40 days and 40 nights sound just the thing.

Damn - we might need to rethink the agenda then, Minx ...

OTOH - CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU, BABSAROONI!!!
It's gonna be great - even without the smearing. *sigh*

Hey Cailleach,
How would you like to be the next nominee for the collective lions short story? Roberta has just posted instalment 14! We would love to have you work your magic! :-)

I am on me way - starting the walk from Cornwall now.
See you gals on Friday, London here I come - eventually......

Se - I'll be over in two ticks!

Minx, I am warming up me rubber bands as we speak - everyone knows that flights from Ireland depend very much on the ability to self-propel ourselves, as a group effort, running as fast as we can down the runway! I just hope that we get to enjoy the lovely views of Wales and Cornwall, like the last time ;)

ooh, RW - 40 days and 40 nights - sounds very biblical, doesn't it? As long as it doesn't involve any 'dry' spells in the desert... ;)

Google won't let me email. Bah! Rec'd your mail and plans are perfick.

D'you have my tel nos still? And do you drink gin?

And - you WERE joking about ditching the chocolate smearing, weren't you???

When you are 40 or over, if you wake up in the morning and nothing hurts you, you are probably dead.

Do something that you can do before you are 40. Whatever gives you the kick, but do it before you are 40. The walk, the bike, the sky, the sailing, the... whatever (you think) your body is ready for an your mind would apprechiate.
