I don't think I'll be forking out for the book, but your review has made me curious to know more about Hazlitt (I should add, that this would not be difficult to achieve, as he's not a writer I'm that familiar with).

William Hazlitt: essayist extraordinaire, Early 19thc, wrote reviews, parliament reports, wrote about art, poetry, sports events (oh yes!), in fact anything that paid. Was a bit bonkers, rubbed people up the wrong way because of his honesty and could rarely be said to be beholden to anyone, in terms of how he'd tackle a subject.

Dominic, Liz, I bet you could get this in your local library if you asked. You can also get a short Penguin Classi that showcases some of his essays - it's called 'On the Pleasure of Hating.' Great read!

And La Fheile Phadraig to you too, Liz!

An interesting review. Tom Paulin makes a case for Hazlitt as the great stylist of the Romantic period.I liked the side point about Pound. Hazlitt and Pound served as literary channels for their Ages, major critical figures.
