Live is the way to appreciate Billy Collins. He's such a brilliant performer. I saw him a few years ago at the Edinburgh Book Festival - his comic timing is spot on every time. I'm not so fond of him on the page, other than a few poems, but I'd listen to him read any time.

I enjoyed your write-up - especially the comments on Collins. I'm not a huge fan of his particularly but I have liked some of his poems and have been amazed by how much negative stuff I've read about him online.

Dear Barbara, so you have heard them reading...I have some tapes of S.Heaney reading "Spirit Level" and "Electric Light". Sober, intense voice.
And Billy Collins... I do not know much of him except two marvellous poems "Writing" and "The Past" in the South African Journal "New Contrast" in which I was lucky to be present too.
I came to your blog this time through the blog "dumbfoundry" which reported your post's headline.
